The World’s Largest Megaship Sets Sail

World’s Largest Megaship Sets Sail: A New Era of Ocean Travel Sparking Enthusiasm and Controversy

Royal Caribbean has made history again with the launch of the world’s largest megaship sets sail, the Star of the Seas. This giant ship officially embarked on its maiden voyage from Port Canaveral, Florida, en route to the Eastern and Western Caribbean on a seven-night cruise.

The World’s Largest Megaship Sets Sail is no ordinary ship. It is the sister ship of the Icon of the Seas, which has already captured the world’s attention. The two now share the official title of the world’s largest cruise ship by gross tonnage, certified by Guinness World Records.

With 20 decks and more than 40 restaurants and bars, the ship is touted as a “floating city” capable of providing unique experiences for a wide range of travelers. From a water park in the middle of the ocean, an aquarium dome with a 55-foot waterfall, to a Back to the Future-themed musical entertainment complete with a replica of the iconic DeLorean car,

It’s no surprise that the ship’s maiden voyage immediately became a hot topic on social media. Thousands of posts from passengers showcased the expansive interior, futuristic amenities, and unrivaled luxury.

Surge in Demand: Cruise Travel Becomes a Popular Choice

Surge in Demand: Cruise Travel Becomes a Popular Choice

According to cruise industry expert Stewart Chiron, demand for sea vacations is at an all-time high. In fact, he stated that cruise bookings for the coming years will surpass previous records.

According to abc.com, “More people are booking cruises than at any time in history. Passenger satisfaction is incredibly high, and with the arrival of new ships, this trend is even more exciting,” Chiron said on Good Morning America.

AAA data supports this claim. 2025 marks the third consecutive year that cruise passenger volumes have reached record levels. This demonstrates the strength of the industry’s rebound after the slump caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

From Hotels to Sea vacations: Shifting Vacation Trends

One reason for this surge in interest is the increasing cost of hotels. Many travelers find land-based accommodations unaffordable, turning to cruises as a more affordable vacation alternative.

“People are getting fed up with sky-high hotel rates. Instead, they’re opting for the cruise experience. Some who previously only went once or twice now go up to five times a year,” Chiron added.

Another factor is the variety of destinations. Modern cruise ships don’t just ferry passengers, but also offer exclusive experiences in select ports managed directly by the operator. This creates a unique experience and increases appeal.

New Competition: Destinations and Experiences

While World’s Largest Megaship like Star of the Seas are in the spotlight, Chiron emphasized that the “real race” is on the destinations. Cruise lines are now seeking to control more aspects of the trip, from private ports to exclusive passenger activities.

For example, this week Virgin Voyages will launch Brilliant Lady, an adults-only cruise ship offering diverse itineraries from Canada to the Caribbean. Innovations like this demonstrate that competition is no longer limited to ship size, but also to unique experiences found only at sea.

Hawaii Implements New Tax: Addressing Overtourism or a Barrier to Tourism?

Behind the excitement of the World’s largest megaship setting sail, a controversial aspect has emerged. Hawaii recently signed a new law imposing an additional tax on tourists, including cruise ship passengers.

Starting next year, every cruise ship ticket that calls at Hawaiian ports will be subject to a proportional tax based on the length of the stay. This measure is claimed to help the state address the impacts of climate change while also addressing the problem of overtourism.

However, not everyone has welcomed this policy. Critics argue that the additional fee will make vacations in Hawaii too expensive, forcing tourists to turn to other destinations.

In fact, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has filed a lawsuit in Honolulu federal court, claiming the policy is unconstitutional. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 31, and the outcome will be a significant focus for the tourism industry.

The Future of Cruise Travel

With the arrival of ships like Star of the Seas, the trend of “World’s Largest Megaships Set Sail” seems set to dominate in the coming years. The growth of this industry demonstrates that the global public increasingly desires a practical, luxurious, and comprehensive vacation experience.

However, challenges such as additional taxes, environmental issues, and overtourism management must still be considered. Moreover, the increasing number of tourists means a greater responsibility for cruise lines to maintain sustainability.

Conclusion

The arrival of “World’s Largest Megaships Set Sail” marks a new era in global tourism. Magnificent ships like Star of the Seas offer unforgettable experiences while also boosting economic growth in the destinations they visit.

However, behind the glitz and glamour of luxurious amenities and the surge in interest, there are real challenges in regulation, taxes, and environmental sustainability. The cruise industry is now at a crossroads: between satisfying tourists’ desires for luxury and maintaining a balance with nature and local communities.

One thing is certain: the world will continue to monitor how these giant ships change the face of modern tourism.
